Germany have disclosed the severity of the injuries suffered by defenders Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng in their opening 4-0 win over Portugal.

Dortmund defender Hummels scored the second goal for the Germans before coming off injured after half an hour of the game while Bayern Munich defender Boateng played out the full ninety minutes in their huge win over the Seleccao.

MRI scans have now confirmed the extent of the injuries Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels sustained in Germany’s 4-0 win in their opening World Cup group match against Portugal in Salvador,” read an official statement on their website.

Bayern defender Boateng partially tore the collateral ligament in his right hand in a fall, and must now wear a thumb brace for six weeks. He can continue to play during this time subject to the referee’s approval.

Hummels has sustained bruising to his right thigh with some bleeding into the surrounding muscles. Germany’s team doctors will wait to see how healing progresses before determining when the Dortmund centre-back can return to full training and whether he will be able to feature in Die Mannschaft’s second group match against Ghana in Fortaleza.

Germany lead Group G with the USA on three points but the semi finalists of the last World Cup are over the Americans on goal difference after the first round of fixtures in that group.
