Calls have been made for Paolo Maldini to be part of the new Italian national set up as the FIGC meets today to discuss various options.

The Italian football federation is expected to have at the top of their agenda the selection of a new Azzurri coach as well as how best to use the huge experience offered by the ex-AC Milan legend.

La Gazzetta dello Sport is reporting that some members of the board are looking for an experienced tactician to lead La Nazionale in the short term, with Paolo Maldini alongside him to eventually takeover at the helm.

Francesco Guidolin, who recently stepped down at Udinese, is now a front runner should the FIGC decide to go with the above strategy, hoping that Maldini can learn under the tutelage of someone like the ex-Zebrette coach.
