Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho believes Italy will win their Group D match against Costa Rica on Friday because they possess more confidence than their opponents.

Both teams managed to secure victories in their first matches of this summer’s tournament in Brazil, with the Azzurri landing a 2-1 victory over England and the Ticos earning an unexpected 3-1 win over Uruguay, though Mourinho feels that Costa Rica are unlikely to achieve a surprise result against Cesare Prandelli’s men.

Mourinho spoke to Yahoo Sports about Friday’s match between the two countries and expressed his confidence in Italy’s ability to take the three points.

“I think Italy will win because they have the confidence and the peace of mind,” said the 51-year-old. “Plus, they already have three points.

“Costa Rica have already gotten a surprise result and they’re unlikely to do it a second time. Joel Campbell’s talent isn’t new, just as the tactical system they use isn’t either, nor the way in which they press forward.

“Italy know that Costa Rica won’t be an easy challenge. Prandelli has had time to think about whether he wants to continue with the same team or make some changes that might change the team’s dynamics a bit.

“It would be a tremendous surprise if Italy do not win this game.”
