Andrea Pirlo ItalyThe Italy career of midfielder Andrea Pirlo may not be at an end after all, despite him claiming the World Cup finals would be his last tournament.

After the Azzurri’s first round elimination, the Juventus man has revealed that he may not be ready to stand down from the team just yet.

“For now, I have decided to leave the national team,” he told Sky Sport 24, before adding: “But if the new coach asked about my availability then I would stay and come back to play in blue.”

Pirlo famously said in his book, released this year, that “when I hang up up my Italy shirt I will be hanging up my heart” and it seems that he may not be hanging either up for the moment.

It does remain to be seen, of course, if the 2006 World Cup winner would be in the plans of the new national team boss, whoever it will be.

Following his debut in 2002, Pirlo made 112 appearances for his country and has scored 13 times.
