The future of Roma’s Mehdi Benatia remains uncertain after the capital club have allegedly offered their star-defender a new and improved contract.

After a fantastic debut season with the Giallorossi, the Moroccan centre-back has attracted interest from some of Europe’s wealthiest clubs, with Premier League duo Chelsea and Manchester City particularly interested.

However according to Sky Sport Italia, the latest news from the capital claims that Roma have offered the 27-year-old a new contract in an attempt to persuade him to stay.

The improved offer would see the former Udinese man earn €1.9 million a year plus performance-based bonuses which could bump his salary up to around €2.6 million annually.

Benatia joined the Lupi at the beginning of the 2013/14 season and has proved to be one of the signings of the season, helping Roma to a second place finish in Serie A and amassing 21 clean sheets along the way.
