Uruguay defender Diego Godin admitted that he is sad at being eliminated at the Round of 16 but acknowledged that Colombia were the better team but he feels his side can leave Brazil with their heads held high and he wanted to pay tribute to the Uruguayan fans.

La Celeste lost 2-0 to Colombia in the knockout rounds after Godin’s late goal against Italy had seen them escape the group stages at the Azzurri’s expense.

“I feel sad, we wanted to keep moving forwards,” said Godin in his post-match comments.

“The whole country has been with us, through good and bad and that’s how it will always be.”

“We can leave with our heads held high, we have nothing to reproach ourselves for.

“I am sad but I can feel the affection of everybody.

“You can win or you can lose but the important thing is to give your all for this shirt.

“Colombia were the stronger team in the end.”
