Alberto Zaccheroni has resigned as coach of Japan following a disappointing campaign at the 2014 World Cup.

Japan’s tournament ended on Tuesday as they were beaten 4-1 by Colombia.

Zaccheroni took charge of Japan in 2010 and led the country to a record fourth Asian Cup title in 2011, but has assumed full responsibility for the results and performances at the World Cup.

“I am the one that decided on the tactics and how we play and I want to take full responsibility,” the Italian stated as reported by Tuttomercatoweb.

“Everyone got together at lunch today and I offered my thanks to all the people that have supported the team. I would select exactly the same players and staff if I had another chance.”
