Demitrio AlbertiniFIGC presidential candidate Demetrio Albertini has condemned rival Carlo Tavecchio for his recent racist comments that have sparked a row in the peninsula.

The former AC Milan star is one of two candidates for the presidency of the FIGC, with Tavecchio believed to be frontrunner for the job until his gaffe that lead to accusations of racism this week.

Albertini, who has the support of the players union and the likes of Roma and Juventus, has responded strongly.

“His phrase speaks for itself and has put us in a difficult position internationally,” Albertini explained to Sky Sport Italia.

“We need to be more tolerant and set a good example.”

Asked if he feels more support from clubs following the controversy, Albertini played down the impact on his own campaign.

“I feel the full support of the players and coaches. If presidents have changed their minds then they must make it known.”

Finally, on the subject of FIFA’s call for an investigation into Tavecchio, Albertini made his views clear.

“We are one of the most important federation’s in the world. I’m sorry, but I know the rules. There is zero tolerance towards this type of behaviour.”
