Napoli defender Raul Albiol is confident that the Azzurri are making the proper improvements this summer in order to avoid some of the mistakes they made last season.
The Partenopei had a successful run last term during Rafa Benitez’s first season as coach of the Italian side, securing a third place finish and winning the Coppa Italia, but the 28-year-old believes his team will be able to do even better during the 2014-15 campaign now that it will be the tactician’s second year with the club.
Albiol spoke to Sportitalia from Napoli’s training camp in Dimaro about the club’s mission for the new season, while also commenting on Spain’s poor showing at this summer’s World Cup.
“This season we need to improve,” said the Spain international. “We need to be the most prepared for the Champions League, which is the most important thing at this time.
“This will be our second year with Benitez at Napoli, we do not want to make the same mistakes as last year, so now we need to find our form.
“We have to depend only on ourselves in the Champions League in order to avoid the difficult situation we experienced last season.
“World Cup? Spain began the tournament in the wrong way, so when we entered the second match it was like a final and it became a complex situation.
“Italy had won and had the opportunity to go through. I’m sure that both national teams will be able to bounce back in upcoming competitions.”
