Sampdoria goalkeeper Sergio Romero was in a jubilant mood after he saved two penalties in the shootout during Argentina’s semi-final victory over the Netherlands which coincidentally fell on Argentina independence day.

The 27-year-old hardly played during a loan spell with Monaco during the 2013-14 Ligue 1 season yet Albiceleste coach Alejandro Sabella has kept faith in the goalkeeper who now has a good reason to celebrate after his heroics on international duty.

“We are celebrating this win along with our people and I am so happy,” said a delighted Romero in his post-match comments.

“I dedicate this victory to my family.”

“I feel immense happiness, I’m really happy with everything.

“[Penalties] are a question luck, that is the reality.

“I had confidence in myself and fortunately everything turned out well.”

Romero also began to look ahead to the final against Germany:

“The final is a one-off game and anything could happen as luck is also an important element.”

“Playing Germany will be difficult, but our objective since the first day of training has been to reach the final.”

“Tonight we celebrate, but from tomorrow we’ll think about Germany and the final.”
