Carlo TavecchioFIGC presidential candidate Carlo Tavecchio has once again reiterated his refusal to withdraw his candidacy for the position.

The resignation of former president Giancarlo Abete following Italy’s elimination from the World Cup has left a power vacuum in Italian football, which Tavecchio had looked odds on to fill until racist comments last week led to a number of Serie A clubs withdrawing their support from the candidate.

“Its absolutely not true that I can not do any more,” Tavecchio blasted, referring to his impact on Italian football at the age of 71, as reported by the ANSA news agency.

“I will continue with my candidacy for the presidency of the FIGC.

“I have the support of all four Leagues, so I will continue.”

Tavecchio has become a lightning rod in Italian football as his battle with Demetrio Albertini for the presidency continues, with many considering the 71 year old out of touch and even FIFA demanding an investigation into the president of the Amateur Leagues.

However, as Tavecchio maintains, with the vast majority of the Leagues still in favour of the his presidency, he may still become the top man in Italian football.
