Former Juventus player and coach Ciro Ferrara is shocked at Antonio Conte’s resignation and believes Roberto Mancini is a good replacement.

Ferrara, who had an unsuccessful spell in charge of the Bianconeri in 2009, was eventually succeeded in his role as Juventus coach by former teammate Conte, who went on to win three successive league titles with The Old Lady.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, Ferrara admitted his surprise as he thought the former Juventus captain would leave next summer.

“I’m surprised by the resignation of Antonio Conte. I imagined that he would not renew and leave at the end of the season.”

Conte had signed a one year extension to his contract in May, despite hinting that his time at Juventus may have been coming to an end, but today the former midfielder left the club on the second day of pre-season training.

Ferrara was asked about the legendary midfield general’s replacement in Turin, in particular one of the favourites for the job, Roberto Mancini.

“Mancini in place of Conte? At this level, he is one of the few good choices.”

Juventus will now begin the search for a new manager with the aforementioned Mancini and Massimiliano Allegri being made the early favourites for the job.
