Former Estudiantes La Plata defender and Fiorentina star Facundo Roncaglia was delighted to return to the club where he made his name.

Roncaglia played for Estudiantes during the 2010/2011 season, a year before he joined Fiorentina from Boca Juniors, and is hoping to rediscover the form that brought him to Florence this pre-season, having made only 13 appearances for the Europa League qualifiers last season.

“It’s always nice to come back,” Roncaglia told the newspaper Ole before Mario Gomez gave La Viola a 1-0 win in the first match of their pre-season tour.

“I’m really happy to be back in this stadium, and to embrace my old teammates.

“Estudiantes are ahead of us in terms of preparation since the Argentine championship starts earlier while most of us have only recently gotten back from holidays. Hopefully we’ll have a lot of fun.”

Roncaglia played for over an hour in the first win of Fiorentina’s tour of South America, with a strike on the half hour mark from Mario Gomez giving La Viola the win.
