Inter defender Andrea Ranocchia has the fans backing to succeed Javier Zanetti as captain of the Nerazzurri after being presented to a rousing reception on Friday.

Ranocchia is currently in contract negotiations with the Nerazzurri but is widely expected to be given the captaincy with coach Walter Mazzarri confirming as much at the start of the week.

Currently at pre-season training in the northern town of Pinzolo, Ranocchia and his teammates were presented to a crowd of hundreds of fans on Friday with the fans singing his name in place of former captain Zanetti’s, according to Fcinternews.it, before the player spoke to the crowd.

“The chorus for me? It is very moving,” he admitted.

“I’m glad to be here. Your affection has always been outstanding, it has meant so much to me.

“Its an honour to wear this shirt, we are all working hard for these colours and to bring them back to where they deserve to be.”

Ranocchia is expected to sign a new deal with Inter in the coming weeks.
