New Genoa signing Alessandro Matri admits that he’s happy to have joined the Rossoblu this summer and will be looking to help his team do well during the upcoming season.

The 29-year-old, who recently arrived at the Grifone on a season-long loan from AC Milan, is ready to make up for his unsuccessful trials with the Rossoneri and Fiorentina last term and appreciates the faith that club president Enrico Preziosi has shown by signing him.

Matri spoke to Genoa’s official website about his confidence in the team’s ability to do well during the 2014-15 campaign, while also commenting on new team-mate Diego Perotti who joined the Serie A side from Sevilla on July 2.

“The president has repeatedly expressed his appreciation and respect for me and I am happy that coach [Gian Piero] Gasperini sees me as a first choice player,” said the striker, who scored a brace in his first friendly appearance for the Rossoblu on Saturday.

“I’m a player who attacks in depth, rather than goes to meet the ball. I need to improve my protection of the ball. The coach wants me to take advantage of all the movements in my area on the pitch.

“I failed to meet expectations last season and I was very disappointed, but now I’m prepared to relaunch myself and start over.

“We are a young team, but there is a good base and we have the desire to do well and start again. Our first objective is to achieve salvation, but hopefully we’ll be ready to raise the bar.

“Perotti? He’s a very technical player and he’s very good in one-on-one situations. However, we must not forget that he has never played in Italy before and we need to give him time to adapt before we make judgements.”
