New Cagliari coach Zdenek Zeman has played down reports that his training methods are too intense ahead of the Rossoblu’s new season.

Zeman was appointed to the Sardinian’s bench in June following the successful takeover of the club by entrepreneur Tommaso Giulini. The Czech is well known for his hard pre-season training as his attacking 4-3-3 philosophy demands a lot from his players.

“After 40-year career nobody ever died from this type of preparation, we will need to deal with the season ahead,” Zeman told Sky Sport Italia.

“I have a group of young guys and young people who try to follow me. It is necessary to suffer now for the benefit of the long run.

“Take our captain Daniele Conti for example. If you prepare well you can play at a high level even at his age.”

Zeman also looked back at his time at Roma and how it ended in disappointment and about the Scudetto favourites for the 2014/2015 season.

“The time in Rome didn’t end well but I’m glad of the experience.

“Roma, Juventus, Napoli and the two Milan clubs are favourites but we all start on zero points and it will be all decided on the pitch.”
