New Sassuolo signing Sime Vrsaljko has revealed that although he didn’t want to leave Genoa this summer he is happy to have joined the Neroverdi.

The Croatian fullback joined the Neroverdi for €3.5 million after just one season at Stadio Luigi Ferraris despite being heavily linked with the likes of Juventus, AC Milan and Fiorentina before his move.

“I am very happy to be at Sassuolo. A few clubs were also trying to get me, but I was convinced by the coach [Eusebio] Francesco Di who wanted me here desperately,” he told Sportske Novoste.

“I did not want to leave but Genoa wanted me to. After the World Cup, the president [Enrico] Preziosi told me that I was no longer required.

“I don’t know why the move to Milan didn’t work out. I just know that the Rossoneri did not reach an agreement with Genoa and I feel that the move to Sassuolo is the right one for me as the project here involves a young and ambitious side.”

“Future with Juventus? I am just focussing on next season and I don’t know anything else.

“This is a great opportunity for me and I’m happy to be at a club where I can continue to grow.

“I played in a four man as well as a five man defence at Genoa and I’ll gladly play wherever the coach wants me to.

“Sassuolo is like a small family. Last season was the first time Sassuolo were in the Serie A and it is always difficult after promotion, though I am convinced that the team will do better next season.”
