Paletta - ItalyAfter a fleeting appearance for Italy at the World Cup this summer Parma defender Gabriel Paletta admitted there was a lot of disappointment within the squad after defeat to Uruguay condemned them to a group stage exit, insisting they must be challenging for the trophy in four years’ time.

Whilst acknowledging the Azzurri’s failure in Brazil, particularly their inability to score against the South Americans and Costa Rica, the Gialloblu man was still surprised that coach Cesare Prandelli decided to step down and assured there was no standoff with Mario Balotelli after their elimination.

“There was a lot of disappointment after the match with Uruguay,” Paletta told Sky Sport Italia.

“We must roll up our sleeves to return to being competitive at the next World Cup.

“We started well, we played a good World Cup but perhaps lacked the killer instinct in front of goal.

“I never expected Prandelli’s resignation. Nothing happened [with Balotelli] in the locker room.”

The 28-year-old would not be drawn on whether recently departed Juventus coach Antonio Conte should replace Prandelli, however, he did give his support to former Italian midfielder Demetrio Albertini to become president of the Italian football federation.

“I do not I decide [who will be coach],” continued Paletta. “I’m sure any decision will be right for the national team.”

“According to me Albertini is the right name, he has all the credentials to do well. “
