Roma legend Francesco Rocca has emerged as a potential candidate for the Italian national team coaching position left vacant by current Galatasaray coach Cesare Prandelli.

Rocca spent 23 years coaching Italy at youth level, which makes him a favourite of Carlo Tavecchio, the front-runner for the presidency of the Italian federation.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Rocca’s experience coaching the U-17, U-20, and U-23 sides give him an advantage over fellow candidates Antonio Conte and Roberto Mancini.

The report also states that Tavecchio seeks a coach who can oversee player development and enforce a certain style of play across all age levels in the Italian national game.

It is also worth mentioning that the former fullback guided the Italian U-23 squad to a fourth place finish in the Seoul Olympics in 1988, as well as leading the U-19 side to the final of the UEFA European Championship in 2008 where the squad fell to Germany.
