Sampdoria sporting director Carlo Osti has confirmed that goalkeeper Sergio Romero is on the verge of joining Benfica.

The 27 year old starred for Argentina at this year’s World Cup and his strong performances on the world stage appear to have caught the attention of the Portuguese giants.

“[Sergio] Romero is departing the club, and he is likely to join Benfica after today,” Orsi confirmed to Sport Italia. “Expect some news next week.”

“Replacements? We are looking at [Udinese’s Zeljko] Brkic, [Palermo’s Emiliano] Viviano and [Catania’s Alberto] Frison.”

Romero recently returned to Sampdoria after spending last season on loan at Monaco.
