Sampdoria have reportedly begun their pursuit of former Celtic forward Georgios Samaras ahead of the 2014-15 season.

The Scottish club had allowed the 29-year-old’s contract to run out at the end of the 2013-14 campaign without offering him a renewal and he has since been linked with a transfer to Serie A side Lazio, as well as with a possibile move back to the Hoops, though it now seems the Blucerchiati are preparing to enter the race to acquire his services as well.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Sampdoria have already begun negotiations with the Greek international’s representatives on Friday and may be readying a proposal in hopes of landing his signature in the near future.

Samaras had been with Celtic since arriving from Manchester City in 2008 and had scored a total of 53 goals in his 171 Scottish Premiership appearances during his time with the Bhoys.

The striker also represented Greece at this summer’s World Cup in Brazil up until their round of 16 elimination by Costa Rica, netting one goal in his four appearances.
