Sunderland manager Gus Poyet is confident of signing left back Marcos Alonso permanently from Fiorentina in the summer transfer window.

Alonso joined the Black Cats on loan from La Viola in January and played a vital role in helping them avoid relegation.

“We are negotiating the deal for Alonso with Fiorentina,” Poyet told Sunderland Echo.

“The present situation is somehow different, but we are confident in wrapping up the deal”.

It is expected that Sunderland could offer Modibo Diakite to Fiorentina in the deal to capture Alonso.

In his six-month spell on Wearside, Alonso made 16 Premier League appearances for the Black Cats.
