Inter president Erick Thohir has explained that the club require time to catch with the riches of Europe’s most elite teams, while he has also reiterated his faith in Financial Fair Play.

The Indonesian also insisted that raising revenue was the key priority with regards to Inter’s standing in the global football financial market.

“To be sure of this it is necessary that Inter excel on and off the field. If we do not raise revenue, then it becomes difficult to be competitive,” he told TopSkor. “So, the main thing is to increase revenue.

“Take the example of Real Madrid – the Spanish club has a turnover of around €518 million, while Inter have dropped to €169m

He was also questioned as to how he felt about UEFA’s highly-scrutinised model of Financial Fair Play to which he insisted he remained supportive. However, he has registered concern over Inter’s financial performance in the last year.

“I know the controversy about the fines [for Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain] that are too modest for some, but I remain convinced of the goodness of the project of Michel Platini,” he said.

“Is the process an opportunity for Inter? After closing the books this July, we can say that the situation has improved over the past year.”

One area of potential increased revenue is improving San Siro or building a new stadium, but Thohir remained realistic when quizzed about that opportunity.

“I am convinced that it is better to have a ground of 40,000-50,000 that is always full, than a half-empty one of 80,000.”

Inter have made steps in trying to improve their financial performance by appointing Michael Bolingbroke as their new CEO.
