Despite a man of the match performance to his credit in the World Cup semi-final, Netherlands defender Ron Vlaar spoke of his World Cup heartbreak at losing out to Argentina.

Having enjoyed an outstanding display across the 90 minutes and extra time, it was a cruel twist of fate when he stepped up first for the Dutch and saw his spot kick saved by Sergio Romero as his side’s World Cup hopes vanished.

Speaking to NOS afterwards, Vlaar said: “I had a good game? Yes that is true but in the end you are standing here with your hands empty so…

“This just hurts so much because our dream has burst. I had done so much to get here and now it has ended.”

Vlaar ended the game with 100% tackles won and aerial duels won in a near flawless performance.
