Mario Gotze scored an extra time winner for Germany as they became the first team outside of South America to win the World Cup in the continent.

A cagey final that saw a plethora of nearly moments was settled on the one true moment of quality from the Bayern Munich man.

Lionel Messi was quiet as the Germans lifted their fourth World Cup and as the first as a united country.

Here we look at how the Argentinians performed as Gotze won the World Cup for Germany.

Did we get them right? Have your say in the comments below.

Sergio Romero 6 Unlucky

Made a few good saves but was rarely troubled in normal time. Could be classed at as fault for the Gotze goal but it was a fantastic finish.

Pablo Zabaleta 6 Limited

Looked solid and a threat down the Argentinian right as Argentina looked to exploit Howedes but as the game went on, the attacking intent had stopped.

Martin Demichelis 7 Solid

Solid from the Manchester City man who has been faultless since entering the side late in the competition.

Ezequiel Garay 7 Composed

The newly signed Zenit defender didn’t look like having a single man get beyond him in the 120 minutes and looked composed and solid throughout. His partnership with Demichelis has been so solid since Fernandez was benched.

Marcos Rojo 5 Disappointing

Gave Ozil too much time as full time came towards a close to give Ozil enough time to pick out Kroos for a shot 20 yards out. Looked relatively solid throughout though but Germany sensed a mistake and the injury doubt never put his mark on the game.

Javier Mascherano 7 Effective

Took a team booking with half an hour to go after a period of questionable passing from the Barcelona man. Impact was subdued but the fact that Germany’s most influential members were offered very little time on the ball would suggest his overall influence was good.

Lucas Biglia 6 Quiet

In the engine room of the Argentinian midfield. Covering the defence very well but never made an impact.

Enzo Perez 6 (off for Fernando Gago 86) Suited

Having come in from the cold in the last few games, looked like he had the legs and ability to be in a World Cup final.

Ezequiel Lavezzi (off for Sergio Aguero 45) 6

Showed willing runs throughout the first half and his pace caused the German defence a few problems. Replaced at half time.

Lionel Messi 6 Ineffective

Showed encouraging spells early on. Just after half time had a one on one from a difficult angle but eventually looked tired and injured and struggled to have much of an impact.

Gonzalo Higuain (off for Rodrigo Palacio 77) 5

Missed a fantastic opportunity early on as Toni Kroos headed the ball onto the Argentina striker. The Napoli striker snatched at the opportunity and it went wide of the German goal. He also had a goal disallowed on a disappointing evening.

Sergio Aguero (on for Ezequiel Lavezzi 45) 6

Showed terrific strength throughout the second half but a yellow card against Schweinsteiger was called for.

Rodrigo Palacio (on for Gonzalo Higuain 77) 5

Missed a fantastic chance six minutes into injury time as Neuer bared down on the Inter striker.

Fernando Gago (on for Enzo Perez 86) 5

Had no impact on the game after coming on just before full time.

Alejandro Sabella 5

An average performance from the Argentina boss as his tactics looked spot on as Angel Di Maria missed the final through his unfortunate injury.

Lavezzi was replaced by Aguero at half time despite the former looking a threat but he wasn’t able to do anything about the misses that Higuain failed to convert and struggling to keep a half fit Messi firing.
