Former AC Milan legend refused to criticize the club for their decision to sell Mario Balotelli to Premier League side Liverpool, highlighting that the strikers’ comments after arriving in Merseyside suggest he should never have returned to Serie A.

Despite previously having competed in Italy at city rivals Inter the 24-year-old struggled live up to the high expectations of the Rossoneri fans as they struggled last term, despite hitting 14 goals in 30 league appearances.

“It is always difficult to judge from the outside, but from what he said in his first interview as a Liverpool player it was a mistake to return to Italy,” Albertini told Milan News.

“Mario can give so much to the Italian national team, he is one of the most important players in our group.

“He has a great ability but he has to write his own future, it all depends on Mario.”

With reports that the Rossoneri have made enquiries regarding the availability of his former Atletico Madrid teammate Fernando Torres, now at Chelsea, he indicated that the cut-price arrivals at the San Siro this summer could mean the Spaniard is out of reach.

“We see [recently] the kind of investments that Milan will do,” continued Albertini. “Fernando is a friend, but let’s first see first what type of investment Milan will make after the sale of Balo.”
