Demetrio Albertini was critical of Carlo Tavecchio’s appointment on Monday, calling the appointment of the national amateur league president as more of the same corporate mindset.

The former Milan and Azzurri midfielder was Tavecchio’s opposition and had proposed dramatic changes including a reduction of Serie A sides from 20 to 18, a similar reduction of Serie B squads from 24 to 20 and mandating each club have no less than 10 homegrown players.

“I always said I hoped to represent an alternative and a move away from the existing corporate mindset, but it won out,” Albertini stated as he was interviewed by La Gazzetta della Sport after the election results.

The 42-year old was a proponent of altering the manner in which in young players are developed, specifically calling on all clubs to share in the collective responsibility and sacrifice their immediate short-term goals for the sake of increasing the quality and experience of young players throughout Italy.

“The old way of thinking was always going to be difficult to overcome and I wish Tavecchio luck, but it won’t be easy.”
