Fiorentina new signing Jose Maria Basanta says he joined the Tuscany side to win the Scudetto and hopes they can hold on to star winger Juan Cuadrado.

The 30-year-old defender was presented to the media on Monday after completing his move to the Viola from Mexican side Monterrey and is looking forward to playing in Serie A with Fiorentina.

“I had this great opportunity in this particular moment of my career. It was probably the last opportunity to get a move to Europe”, Basanta told the Firenzeviola.it website.

“It was a choice taken with my family. Italian football is one of the best in the world and the Fiorentina is a great club that wants to grow more and more. The goal is to finish in the top four in the standings and who knows, maybe even win the Scudetto.”

The former Estudiantes man is hoping his new side can hold on to fellow South American Juan Cuadrado who’s been linked with a move away for most of this transfer window.

“Cuadrado has demonstrated his qualities. Hopefully he can continue to grow and play in the team he wants. I hope he can stay in Florence because he is a player who makes a difference in the field. He can help us to fight for the championship.”
