Napoli coach Rafael Benitez says individual errors cost Napoli a place in the group stages of the Champions League.
The Partenopei were beaten 3-1 away against Athletic Club in the 2nd leg of the play-off round of the Champions League and lost the tie 4-2 on aggregate after a host of errors by the Napoli defense were punished severely by the Spanish side.
“It was a difficult game but Athletic couldn’t break us down in the first half,” Benitez told Sky Sport Italia.
“Then we took the lead and looked in control until the errors. We gave away three silly goals which you can’t do at this level and we can only blame ourselves.
“They played with high intensity and we made some individual errors which we must work on before our next match.”
Napoli now face the prospect of Europa League football as they kick-off their Serie A campaign against Genoa at the weekend.
