The Third Round of the 2014-15 edition of the Coppa Italia began on Thursday evening as the Serie A clubs entered the competition from this stage.

There have already been several surprises with Chievo and Palermo both suffering shock exits.

Chievo crashed out after a 1-0 defeat at Pescara, while Palermo were stunned 3-0 at home to Modena as Nicola Ferrari opened the scoring for the Canarini after just five minutes before Stefano Beltrame and Andrea Schiavone completed the rout.

Meanwhile, Sassuolo and Atalanta avoided upset after comfortable wins.

Sassuolo beat Cittadella 4-1 with Nicola Sansone bagging a brace and Luca Cigarini and Leonardo Spinazzola were on target for Atalanta in the opening and closing 10 minutes of a 2-0 win against Pisa.

Zdenek Zeman’s Cagliari also made short work of recently relegated Catania, as Marco Sau and Diego Farias scored within the opening 18 minutes of a 2-0 victory.

Avellino came from behind to beat Bari 2-1 in a match where Gianmario Comi seemingly bit Bari striker Guseppe De Luca, and Perugia pegged Spezia back with a late strike and went on to win 2-1 after extra time.

The remaining Third Round fixtures conclude on Sunday evening with Genoa, Hellas Verona, Lazio, Cesena, Empoli, Sampdoria and Udinese all in action.

Results: Sassuolo 4-1 Cittadella, Pescara 1-0 Chievo, Atalanta 2-0 Pisa, Varese 1-0 Virtus Entella, Palermo 0-3 Modena, Perugia 2-1 Spezia (aet), Bari 1-2 Avellino, Cagliari 2-0 Catania.
