Vargas – Fiorentina

With their involvement in the Copa EuroAmericana over, Fiorentina departed for Florence with attacker Juan Manuel Vargas brushing off suggestions that he had been targeted for criticism by fans during the Viola’s 1-0 win over Universitario in his hometown of Lima.

The 30-year-old Peru international insisted that he had been well received by fans during the match and had only heard cries of encouragement as he looks to hit peak fitness for the upcoming Serie A campaign.

“People encouraged me and behaved very well with me,” Vargas told Firenzeviola.it.

“I did not hear the boos or whistles, but only the applause.

“The truth is that for me it’s all quiet. Even at the end of the first-half I heard the songs in my favour and I’m really happy for that.

“I’m training to recover my best shape for the championship.”

After the narrow victory over the South Americans the former Universitario man also expressed his belief that some of his countrymen could succeed in Italy and that they should be considered potential transfer targets for the Florence side.

“Against Universitario I have seen some good players and I thought that Fiorentina could even take them into consideration,” he continued. “Soon I hope many are able to go abroad, so that they can improve.”
