Sunderland defender Modibo Diakite will reportedly not be a Fiorentina player next season.

The Frenchman spent the second half of the 2013/14 campaign on loan with the Viola and appeared in nine matches, but it appears the Italian club haveĀ decided not to activate the option for a permanent purchase.

According to the Shields Gazette, the two clubs held talks that would have seenĀ Fiorentina youngster Marcos Alonso move permanently to the Black Cats, but negotiations have broken down, thus spelling a Premier League return for Diakite.

Prior to moving to Sunderland, the 27-year old spend eight seasons with Lazio where he made 80 appearances and scored two goals.
