Marquez MexicoMexican national team captain Rafael Marquez has agreed to join Hellas Verona from Club Leon on a one-year deal, with the option to extend his stay at the end of the season.

Marquez led the Mexican club to back-to-back Liga MX titles in the past two seasons and also led his country for a record fourth successive time during the World Cup finals in Brazil.

“Rafael Marquez has been transferred to Hellas Verona in the Italian Serie A,” the official website of Club Leon confirmed. “We hope that his new adventure is full of success.”

The 35-year-old took to Twitter to thank the Guanajuato club’s fans as he posted, “Thank you Leon for all the joy and challenges. I’ll always remember you in my heart.”

Marquez left Barcelona to join the New York Red Bulls in 2010 before returning to his native Mexico two years later after a disappointing time in the United States.
