Former Inter and Fiorentina midfielder Gabriele Oriali has been officially unveiled as Italy team manager by FIGC president Carlo Tavecchio.

The 1982 World Cup winner was officially announced as the new team manager in Vicenza, and is set to succeed Gigi Riva in the role which has been vacant since 2013.

“My first thought goes to Gigi Riva,” Oriali said to La Gazzetta dello Sport. “I hope to be his worthy successor and I’ll ask him soon for some advice.”

Oriali also admitted that he has not yet spoken to head coach Antonio Conte but expects that he will enjoy a good working relationship with the former Juventus coach.

“We’ve still never spoken to each other in person,” he continued. “However, as fellow midfielders we should reach an understanding very quickly.”

In his playing career Oriali won two Serie A titles and two Coppa Italia medals with Inter, in addition to a 1982 FIFA World Cup winner’s medal with the Azzurri.
