Manchester United and new manager Louis van Gaal are reportedly set to make a large bid for Roma defender Mehdi Benatia.

The Red Devils are thought to be willing to spend €38 million for the 27 year old Moroccan international after his impressive first season with the capital club.

According to The Daily Express, the Giallorossi would be willing to open talks despite Roma’s director of football Walter Sabatini recently talking about a price as high as €61m for the talented defender.

The report also suggest that van Gaal could make it a double swoop by also signing Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen for €12.5m.

Last season Benatia made 37 appearances in all competitions for the Giallorossi, scoring five goals after joining from Udinese last summer.
