Genoa striker Alessandro Matri was surprised that Antonio Conte became head coach for the Italy national side but he believes that he is the right man for the job.
Matri, currently on loan at Genoa from AC Milan, previously played under Conte at Juventus and thinks that his recent success at club level will be a good platform for Conte to build on for the Azzurri.
“No one would have expected it,” Matri told Sky Sport Italia. “I didn’t think he would take this step.
“I am happy for the national side, Conte works so hard to be successful, but the time he has with players is lower [at international level].
“He has been good over the past three years, he led Juventus to three consecutive championships and a record points haul.
“He is the right man for the national team.”
