Lorenzo Insigne - NapoliNapoli winger Lorenzo Insigne was insulted by a fan at the airport en route to Bilbao on the eve of the Azzurri’s second leg Champions League playoff tie against Athletic Club on Wednesday.

The 23-year old, who came up through Napoli’s youth system, was whistled by the San Paolo faithful in the first leg upon his second half substitution by Dries Mertens after a poor performance and reacted angrily to the jeers, waving his arms and encouraging them to whistle louder before throwing his jersey to the ground and appearing to mask tears as he covered his head while sitting on the bench.

The situation was complicated when Insigne’s wife took to Instagram to defend her husband by stating the fans didn’t deserve him and accusing them of only supporting players after good performances.

For his part, Insigne has publicly said very little after the display at the San Paolo and held true to that form on Wednesday as he appeared stoic and continued on his flight without a reaction upon the aggrieved fan’s mocking at Napoli’s Capodichino airport.
