Sunderland have had a bid to take Palermo striker Abel Hernandez on a one-year loan rejected.

The Uruguayan has been pursued by the Black Cats with his agent Pablo Betancourt revealing that the forward would relish a move to the Stadium of Light however they they face stiff competition for the striker’s signature from fellow Premier League side Southampton.

Gazzetta dello Sport reports that manager Gus Poyet’s offer for a season-long loan was rejected by Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini, but he expects the former Uruguayan international to return with a better proposal.

The 23-year-old Hernandez scored 14 goals in 28 appearances last season helping the Sicilian side win the Serie B to achieve automatic promotion before going on to represent Uruguay in the recently concluded World Cup in Brazil.
