Palermo took on Sampdoria in Sicily on their return to Serie A and nearly secured a vital three points on Sunday night, only for Daniele Gastaldello to clinch a draw in the final few minutes. Dybala palermo

The Rosanero took an early lead through Paulo Dybala on seven minutes before Vasco Regini was sent off to leave the Blucerchiati with 10 men for half the match, but in the end a draw was probably a fair result.

Palermo

Stefano Sorrentino – 6 – Reliable

Rarely tested in the host’s goal and cannot be faulted for the late equaliser with the majority of questions directed at the defending of the set-piece.

Ezequiel Matias Munoz – 6 – Steady

Lucky not to be penalised for an awful challenge on 15 minutes and along with the rest of the Rosanero back-line should withstand the most Serie A challenges this term.

Claudio Terzi – 7 – Solid

Kept the inform Stefano Okaka quiet and other than his part in the defensive confusion that led to the Sampdoria goal could not be faulted.

Sinisa Andelkovic – 6 – Strong

As with defensive colleagues Munoz and Terzi he will have largely enjoyed Palermo’s return to the Italian top-flight.

Eros Pisano – 6 – Decent

Patrolled the wing well but with Sampdoria controlling the majority of possession had little opportunity to attack the visitors.

Francesco Bolzoni – 6 – Quiet

Felt like the midfielder was largely a passenger as for large parts of the game the visitors were left to play the ball around in areas where there was minimal threat to their goal.

Luca Rigoni – 6 – Adequate

After arriving from Chievo this summer he battled well with Barreto to regain possession but needs to do more to help the side build going forward.

Edgar Barreto – 7 – Determined

Snapping into tackles from the off he worked tirelessly in the Palermo engine room, providing the assist for Dybala’s opener before nearly doubling their lead on 31 minutes.

Fabio Daprela – 6 – Quiet

Little of note from the Swiss wideman and he must offer more in the coming months.

Paulo Dybala – 8 – Clinical

Excellent finish to give the Rosanero the lead, his low left footed drive giving the returning Emiliano Viviano no chance, and will be vital as they look to avoid a relegation scrap this season.

Franco Vasquez – 6 – Positive

Other than a shot that failed to test Viviano in the Sampdoria goal the 25-year-old had a quiet night but can be praised for continually trying to attack the Blucerchiati defence.

Palermo Substitutes

Granddi N’Goyi (for Rigoni 71 minutes) – 5

Failed to affect the match when replacing Rigoni towards the end of the match.

Andrea Belotti (Dybala 77 minutes) – 6

Replaced goalscorer Dybala and continued to badger the Sampdoria defence as they attempted to control possession and find a way through. Could have even netted a vital second late on had he not shot to close to Viviano.

Roberto Vitiello (Pisano 90+1 minutes) – No mark

Sampdoria

Emiliano Viviano – 6 – Solid

Arrived from Palermo this summer to be first-choice in Genoa. Had little to do and was not at fault for the goal.

Fabrizio Cacciatore – 6 – Bored

Other than the initial attacks from the home side that had brought them the lead he had little to do as they were allowed time and space to control possession.

Daniele Gastaldello – 7 – Alert

Provided some stability where the reckless Regini did not. Despite an early attempt on goal nearly clearing the stadium it did not quash his attacking endeavours and was in the right place at the right time to fire in the equaliser.

Vasco Regini – 4 – Woeful

The signs that it was not his night began when a corner kick went horrible wrong and after a needless foul and clumsy hand-ball brought consecutive bookings was given his marching orders with just 4 minutes of the first half remaining.

Lorenzo De Silvestri – 6 – Quiet

Began nervously like the rest of the Sampdoria defence but kept his composure to supply the vital assist for the Gastaldello equaliser in injury-time.

Pedro Obiang – 6 – Probing

With Sampdoria failing to make their dominance in possession count the midfielder was the only player first half that appeared keen to drive the side forward for an equaliser twice forcing Sorrentino into action.

Roberto Soriano – 6 – Tidy

The German-born midfielder moved the ball well as the visitors controlled possession but must do more if he is to have a significant impact on the team.

Angelo Palombo – 7 – Tireless

Usual competitive and tidy performance from the midfielder who was unlucky to be replaced as Sampdoria sought an equaliser.

Eder – 5 – Invisible

Hardly noticeable as they struggled to penetrate a determined Rosanero back-line.

Gianluca Sansone – 5 – Quiet

Was failing to make an impact on the game even before he was substituted so that coach Sinisa Mihaljovic’s could reshuffle the side after the loss of Regini just before the break.

Stefano Okaka – 6 – Subdued

Fresh from a hat-trick in Coppa Italia versus Como the he was full of energy as he looked to penetrate the Palermo defence, unfortunately with limited support from teammates left him often looking frustrated.

Sampdoria Substitutes

Mikael Silvestre (for Sansone 44 minutes) – 5 – Inconsequential

Essentially brought on to replace the Regini after he was sent off but other than managing to stay on the field slightly longer than his teammate provided little more to the team.

Nenad Krsticic (Obiang 66 minutes) – 7 – Crucial

Continued where Obiang had left off releasing a long range effort immediately after entering the play, failing to test the goalkeeper, but ended the match delivering the vital corner kick for Gastaldello’s equaliser.

Gonzalo Bergessio (Palombo 76 minutes) – 6 – Quiet

Would have wanted a bigger impact against his former club Catania’s Sicilian rivals but had little time to impress his new fans.
