Inter captain Andrea Ranocchia has hailed coach Walter Mazzarri and believes the former Napoli boss is the right man for the team.

The 26-year-old defender took over as the Nerazzurri’s skipper following long-serving Javier Zanetti’s retirement at the end of last season, and recently offered his opinion on how Mazzarri’s influence has been not just good for the squad, but for him personally as well.

“Mazzarri is the right man to take us forward,” he opined to Tuttosport.

“He has the quality to help us make that huge leap in quality [to become more competitive].”

Ranocchia also revealed his own doubts during his spell with Inter and credited his coach for helping him to remain with the 2010 Champions League winners.

“In January, I was very close to leaving, but then things changed for me in a short time.

“[And now, as captain], I have observed [players like] Zanetti and [Gianluigi] Buffon for guidance.”

Inter kick off their Serie A campaign with an away clash versus Torino on Sunday.
