Benatia - RomaMehdi Benatia’s departure from Roma is far from certain, but Bayern Munich are understood to be leading the chase.

While Chelsea and Manchester City have been widely reported to be leading the race for the Moroccan international, Bayern have recently snuck into pole-position, as they hold talks and discuss Benatia’s demands.

According to sport1.de, the talks have progressed but some notable stumbling blocks remain: the wages and transfer fee.

Benatia is currently on wages of €1.5 million per year at Roma, an amount which Munich are believed to be willing to double, but the player is holding out for more than that with a request of €4m a year.

In any case, the two clubs are yet to agree on a fee; Bayern technical director Michael Reschke has offered the Italians €35 million for French-born Benatia, which is below Roma’s valuation.

Meanwhile, Bayern president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge refused to comment on speculation, noting that his director Reschke is reported to be in three different places every day.

“Our director Michael Reschke would be flying across Europe, according to various media, and it makes me smile because [Reschke] can not be in different places every day,” he said in a statement reported by Merkur Online.

Should Bayern capture the signature of Mehdi Benatia, he will provide support to the somewhat-thin central defence of Munich- which consists of Holger Badstuber, Jerome Boateng and Dante.
