Serie B will be expanded from 21 to it usual 22 teams for the coming season after Siena failed to register for the new season due to bankruptcy.

This expansion was unanimously agreed upon by the FIGC’s Federal Council, who will select the 22nd team before the season begins.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport teams will be allowed to apply for this open position until August 25.

It is reported that the criteria for selecting the new club will be based 50 percent on last season’s standings, 25 percent on the respective city’s sporting traditions, and the remaining part on average stadium attendance from the 2008-09 through 2012-2013 seasons.

Early indications suggest Juve Stabia, who finished bottom in Serie B last season, will likely be reinstated into the league.

The council also announced that clubs who had suffered points deductions in the past two season due to unsporting activities will not be eligible.

This eliminates the possibility of Novara, Lecce, or Reggina rejoining Serie B.
