Inter defeated Icelandic club Stjarnan 3-0 in the first leg of the Europa League play-off round on Wednesday night.

A nicely finished goal from Mauro Icardi, a header from Dodo and a late strike from Danilo D’Ambrosio won the game for the Italian club.

The Nerazzurri took the initiative straight from kick off when Icardi headed over from a corner in the third minute.

The Icelandic team famous for their crazy celebrations then had a speculative attempt from Pablo Punyed which was straight at Samir Handanovic from 30 yards out.

Inter had a few more chances in the first half as Andrea Ranocchia had his header cleared off the line and then Ruben Botta controlled a long ball expertly and slotted a volley wide from a tight angle.

The deadlock was broken just five minutes before the break when Dodo dinked a ball into the box which wasn’t dealt with by the Stjarnan defence, and Icardi pounced and slotted home to give Inter a deserved 1-0 lead going into half-time.

Just three minutes into the second half the Beneamata doubled their lead as Dodo got his head to Jonathan’s cross at the back post to score on his competitive debut for Inter.

In the 54th minute Juan Jesus played a delicious pass to Hernanes who volleyed at goal but it was well held onto by goalkeeper Ingvar Jonsson.

The home side finally broke through the Inter defence in the 72nd minute when Olafur Finsen’s square ball was well cleared by Juan Jesus.

Then the best effort of the game for the Icelandic outfit came in the 84th minute when Finsen shot from just outside the box but it was saved well by Handanovic.

Pablo Osvaldo nearly started his Inter career with a goal with three minutes left on the clock, when he curled an effort form the edge of the box which crashed off the bar.

The away side did add a third a minute from time as Zdradvko Kuzmanovic laid the ball to D’Ambrosio on the edge of the box who fired the ball into the roof of the net.

The Nerazzurri go back to Italy with a merited three goal advantage, with the second leg to be played on the August 28.
