Carlo TavecchioLND president Carlo Tavecchio stated that he will still stand for election to become the FIGC president despite calls for him to stand down.

The president of Italy’s amateur football leagues met with CONI [Italian National Olympic Committee] president Giovanni Malago on Thursday but it seems that talks have not changed his stance.

“If the leagues give me permission, I will go ahead,” Tavecchio told Sky Sport Italia.

Tavecchio has courted lots of controversy over the last week. He was critical of the over-abundance of foreign players in Italian football but his usage of a fictional African player as an example turned his comments into a racial slur.

It was also revealed on Tuesday in the Italian media that Tavecchio was interviewed on Italian television in May and he had considered women to be “handicapped”.

Despite his controversial remarks and the calls for him on social media to withdraw from the candidacy, he still has the support of the presidents of the leagues.
