Former Juventus striker Gianluca Vialli believes that Italian football is in a fragile situation, and that a great deal of focus is required to bring Italy back to significance on the European stage.

Napoli’s failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League after a 4-2 aggregate defeat at the hands of Athletic Club means that only two Serie A sides will feature in the 2014-15 edition of Europe’s premier club competition, leaving  a lot of cause for concern around  the peninsula.

“It [Italian football] is in a very delicate moment,” the former Italy international told Sky Sport Italia.

“We need to focus on finding appropriate solutions. It will take time and a lot of courage, but if it continues [like this] then the situation can become even worse.

“Tonight the game was balanced to an extent, but when Athletic upped the tempo, Napoli found it hard to react to the pressure.

“The lack of finances is obvious, so we need to touch the bottom and then we have to start from the ground up, but it is critical to have a specific plan in mind.”

2013-14 Scudetto champions Juventus and runners-up Roma are placed in Pot 2 and Pot 4 respectively as they await the Champions League group-stage draw on Thursday.
