Cagliari boss Zdenek Zeman believes that new Italy national team coach Antonio Conte has proven to be one of the best coaches in Europe in recent years.

The 45-year-old was officially named as Cesare Prandelli’s successor on August 14 and Zeman is confident that he’s the optimal choice for the job, though he admits the former Juventus tactician will be taking up an entirely different role when compared to his previous one in Turin.

Zeman spoke during a pre-match press conference on Friday ahead of Cagliari’s Coppa Italia meeting with Catania about the FIGC’s choice to name Conte as the new Italy coach and expressed his hopes to see Italian football restored to a better state than the one it’s currently in.

“Conte? The FIGC chose the one who has proven to be the best coach in recent years,” said the 67-year-old.

“Now, however, his role will be different, as he will have to be the one who selects the players who can best represent a country.

“Hopefully things will settle down in the FIGC and Italian football so we can see things get well again.”
