AC Milan have suffered an injury blow after the club confirmed that midfielder Riccardo Saponara is set to undergo knee surgery.
The 22 year old Italian suffered a sprain in his left knee during a training match, and was immediately transported to the Galeazzi Orthopaedic Institute in Milan.
“During the training session this morning, Riccardo Saponara suffered a sprain in his left knee,” a statement read on the official AC Milan website.
“The player was subsequently transported Galeazzi Orthopaedic Institute in Milan.
“Examinations and a prognosis by specialist Professor Herbert Schonhuber showed a strained lateral collateral ligament and the presence of a flap in the lateral meniscus.
“Tomorrow morning Riccardo Saponara, assisted by the doctors of Milan, will undergo arthroscopic surgery.”
Saponara had been an unused substitute in the Rossoneri’s first two games of the season.
