Sassuolo defender Francesco Acerbi has revealed details regarding his fight with cancer, stating that it was not only a problem physically, but also mentally.
The former AC Milan defender was diagnosed with testicular cancer during the 2013-14 season, but is now out of danger and thankful for the love of his family and friends.
“Cancer is a terrible disease that catches you all of a sudden and it hits you both physically and mentally,” he told Rosanna Banfi and Roberta Flack at the Esmo 2014 Per L’Italia conference.
“Strength, positivity, courage and patience are needed, and it is important to have the love of family and friends to deal with the cycles of chemotherapy.
“I feel very close to those less fortunate than me who are still struggling at home or in a hospital bed against this evil.”
With 112 appearances in league football, Acerbi has recorded six goals and also won his lone international cap under coach Cesare Prandelli in 2012.
