Fiorentina claimed a vital away victory by beating Atalanta 1-0 at Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia on Sunday evening in Serie A.

Richmond Boakye struck the post for the home side, while Marcos Alonso had a good chance to score for the away team before substitute Jasmin Kurtic found the net to give the Gigliati all three points.

Josip Ilicic made it a bright start for La Viola, forcing a fine stop from Dea goalkeeper Marco Sportiello within the first two minutes.

However, it was Atalanta who had the best goalscoring opportunity of the first half when Boayke ran through on goal. The Ghanaian lost his balance and could only just angle a shot towards goal which was deflected by the foot of Fiorentina goalkeeper Neto.

Marcos Alonso ended the first stage of the game with a dipping, swerving shot which was beaten away by Sportiello. After that the defender wasted a free header by guiding it off target under no pressure.

The half-time break saw no changes, and the sides didn’t look like breaking each other down immediately as the first 10 minutes were very even, with two wayward shots being the highlight.

Montella saw it fit to make a change and brought on Jasmin Kurtic in the 56th minute for Milan Badelj, who two minutes later rewarded his coach with a crucial goal.

The midfielder picked up the ball outside of the box after a Matias Fernandez pass, before shaping a shot into the far bottom corner past the despairing dive of Sportiello.

The Fiorentina goal seemed to stun Atalanta into silence, as the attacking style which they had displayed in the first half simply disappeared. It was up to the away side to simply keep their concentration to see the game through, which they duly did.

Fiorentina can now go into their clash with Sassuolo on Wednesday with some sort of momentum, while Atalanta are tasked with an away trip to the San Siro to face Inter.
