Atalanta midfielder Luca Cigarini has rued his side’s missed opportunities in the 0-0 draw against Hellas Verona at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia, but revealed that he is happy to remain with La Dea, and hopes the club can perform this season as well as it did during 2013-14.

The 28-year-old has also spoken highly of Azzurri coach Antonio Conte as he looks to record his first cap for the national team.

“We had some good chances [in the game versus Verona], but it was sinful not to have exploited them,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“I think the result is fair though, but we have important expectations and want to make as many points as we did last year. We will raise the bar.

“I’m happy to stay. It was my priority, and I thank the club that has made a sacrifice to me.

“National team? I think Mr [Antonio] Conte is a great coach. He will surely make the right choices.”

Having featured in Italy’s Olympic football team, the u18s, the u19s, the u20s, and the u21s, but Cigarini is yet to make his debut for the senior team.
